Is a stillborn child named?

Question:

What do the scholars and experts of shari’ah say regarding the naming of a still born child? Is this permissible?

Answer:

All perfect praise is for Allah ﷻ, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah ﷻ, and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.

The naming of a stillborn child is not wajib (necessary). However, if one wishes to, it is mustahab (liked). Imam Nawawi has stated in in ‘Al-Majmu’ Sharh al-Muhaddhab’: “Our Companions have said it is mustahab to name a child if it dies before being named.”

And Allah ﷻ knows best.
