Question:

What do the scholars and experts of Islam say about Fitrana, how much and to whom is it payable and when? Please explain.

 Answer

The amount of Fitrana in weight is equivalent to 3 pounds of grain, or the cost of a meal. The recipients are the same as the recipients of Zakat. The best time to pay this is before the Eid prayer. It is mentioned in the hadith sharif that the fasts of a person are suspended in the heavens until the Fitrana is paid. One must pay it for himself and his children.
