Fasting on the first of Muharram

Question:

What do the scholars and experts of shari’ah say regarding fasting on the first of Muharram?

Answer:

All perfect praise is for Allah ﷻ, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah ﷻ, and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.

Fasting a voluntary fast in the month of Allah ﷻ, Muharram, is permissible and a means of rewards and blessings.

The evidence to support this is the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The best prayer after the prescribed prayers is a prayer offered in the middle of the night. The best fast after the month of Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, al-Muharram.” (Muslim)

And Allah ﷻ knows best
