Question:
What do the scholars and experts of Islam say about paying Zakat to an Islamic school, is it permissible?
Answer
If the Islamic school is based on the principles of Ahlus Sunnah and not of any rejected sects then it is permissible to give them Zakat. However, the proprietor of the school must keep the Zakat money separate and must not pay the salaries of the teachers from it. It can not be used for construction or refurbishment of the building. The best way would be that the money is given to the students as Zakat and then they return it to the school. This money can then be used to provide meals, books and clothing. Furthermore, if Zakat money is paid to a needy person who then gives it to the school. The school can now use this money for the salary of its staff.
