Treating an unborn child

Question:

What do the scholars and experts of shari’ah say regarding the permissibility of a surgeon operating on a pregnant woman? Specifically, to treat the urinary tract of a child in the womb of a woman? Please be aware that this is to preserve the life of the child and there is no danger to the mother at all.

Answer:

All perfect praise is for Allah ﷻ, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah ﷻ, and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.

According to the Shari’ah it is wajib to treat the child in the womb of the mother when the medical experts have deemed the treatment necessary. This should be upon the advice of a qualified specialist doctor, and it must be to preserve the life of the baby.

This procedure will only be permissible if it does not jeopardise the life of the mother.

And Allah ﷻ knows best.
