Is it permissible to repeat the same surah in every raka’ah of salah? Is there a difference if one is reading a fardh or nafl prayer?
It is Makruh Tanzihi to repeat the same surah in each raka’ah in a fardh prayer. It is for this reason that Surah al-Nas should not be deliberately recited in the first raka’ah of salah, so that repeating the surah does not become necessary. If someone recited Surah al-Nas in the first raka’ah, then he should recite that same in the second raka’ah as well, as changing the order of the chapters of the Qur’an incurs greater harm than reciting the same surah in each raka’ah.
This ruling is different when finishing the recitation of the whole of the Qur’an in salah, as to recite Surah al-Nas in the first raka’ah followed by the opening verses from Surah al-Baqarah is permissible.
